BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, (1649) O/Z, rare, with crowned-L countermark on cross, ex-Ponte, ex-McClung, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-17b; Cal-unl (Type 279). 13.68 grams. Choice full countermark in center of full cross-and-tressure with partial date, full and clear •P•O/Z• to left of full shield, no corrosion, toned, with edge-split. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Rob McClung Collection, also plated on page 144 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020).
