BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, (1649-50) O, with crowned-•F• (two dots) countermark on cross, ex-Ponte, ex-Hudson, ex-Bir, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-17b; Cal-Type 279. 11.15 grams. Totally corrosion-free (some flat areas) but still slightly underweight, attractively toned, with very bold countermark in center of full cross, full shield with bold assayer to left, nearly full crown. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Louis Hudson Collection (Sedwick Auction 6, lot 906) and the Mark Bir Collection, also plated on page 329 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020).
