BOLIVIA, Potosí, 8 reales-sized proclamation medal, Ferdinand VII, 1808, La Plata. Fonrobert-unl; Medina-311; Herrera-26. 33.06 grams. 45 mm. Obverse with crowned, rampant lion holding down a two-headed eagle with his lower paw, the upper paw touching a double-stacked castle, inside legend . FERDINANDO . VII [ornament] HISP . ET IND . R . [La Plata monogram] . 1808; reverse with La Plata city arms (double-headed eagle, three mountains, four castles) inside legend . OPTIMO . PRINC . PUBLICE . FIDELIT . IURAT . [ornament]; square-and-circle edge per bust-type 8 reales. AU with splashy rainbow toning, weak rims, plugged hole at top but nevertheless an attractive example of this scarce and popular proclamation medal ordered by Don Domingo de Aníbarro with symbolism showing support for the Spanish resistance under Ferdinand VII against the Napoleonic regime in Spain. Note: Previously this issue was mis-cataloged as Fonrobert-9391, which has the same reverse legend but different design.
