Montenuovo-1336. 29.59 grams, 43mm. Struck in Vienna, dated 12 May 1706, with emperor's bust facing right inside legend CAROLVS . III . REX . HISPAN . ARCH . AVST . on obverse, engraver's initials P.H.M. on truncation, reverse with a view of the city of Barcelona from across its port showing boats and fleeing besiegers, all below a radiant sun to left almost completely covered by the moon, with FVGA GALL. ET ECLIPS. / EOD. DIE 12. MAI. / 1706. in exergue, raised edge-lettering O NIMIVM DILECTE DEO, TIBI MILITAT AETHER. Issued to commemorate the Grand Alliance victory during the War of the Spanish Succession in which the Franco-Spanish army was forced to abandon its siege of Barcelona. The siege coincided with a major solar eclipse, mentioned in the exergue, which was contemporarily referred to as the "Eclipse of the Sun King" as it marked the defeat of Louis XIV, the "Sun King" of France. Deeply toned VF with minor marks and rim-bumps, rare and important for Spanish collectors.
