Augusta, Georgia, The Mechanics Bank, $2 front proof, 184X (1840s), rare. Haxby-GA-60G8P. Very rare india paper proof produced by Danforth, Spencer, and Hufty of New York for the Mechanics Bank of Augusta, Georgia, an institution that lasted from the 1830s to the 1860s; no recent auction appearances of a proof example of this denomination, though issued examples are available (though most are dated to the 1850s and lack the third printed digit of the date). A portrait of Martha Washington is at left between two denominators above American shields; the central vignette is of a blacksmith resting against his anvil with an industrious port city in the background, while a small vignette of an eagle is below between the two removed signature lines (as made). VF with some folds yet retaining good paper quality and color, strong embossing showing on the central vignette, some very light stains.
