The Battle of Pago Largo was an armed confrontation that occurred on March 31, 1839, between the troops of the governor of Entre Ríos, Brigadier General Pascual Echague (who was loyal to the provincial governor of Buenos Aires at the head of the foreign relations of Argentina, Brigadier General Juan Manuel de Rosas) and those of the governor of Corrientes, Colonel Genaro Beron de Astrada, who died during the combat. After its victory, the army of Echague invaded the Banda Oriental (today Uruguay) but was repelled. Ironically the cavalry of the province of Entre Rios was led by Colonel Major Justo Jose de Urquiza, a lieutenant of Echague, who, years later in 1852, would defeat Rosas in the definitive battle of Caseros, an event that would make him leave his long-standing government and flee in exile to England until his death. Urquiza became the first president of the Argentine Confederation, with headquarters in Parana, and is still venerated today in Entre Rios as a provincial hero.
