American naval 32-pound "stand of quilted grapeshot," early 1800s, rare. 13,460 grams, 9-1/2" tall and 5-1/2" in diameter. Round-base post with clusters of twelve 2-1/4" cannonballs in three separate, staggered layers, a type in use from the War of 1812 up to the Civil War, originally encased in canvas and rope quilting but now with the balls pinned together for display, professionally conserved after recovery from a river in southern Virginia (unidentified shipwreck).
