AUSTRALIA (under Great Britain), Melbourne, gold sovereign, Victoria (young head), 1872-M, St. George type. Sp-3857; KM-7; Fr-16. 7.97 grams. AU with splashes of red toning on reverse, particularly bold rims (a few tiny nicks on reverse), scarce first year for the Melbourne mint of just 748,180 coins (which includes shield-type sovereigns as well) compared to millions for common dates. Pedigreed to Sedwick auction 20, with original lot-tag 83. Recovered from: Schiehallion, sunk in 1879 off the Isle of Wight, England
