ARGENTINA, San Juan, Banco de Cuyo, undated (1890s) proof and specimen set: 100 pesos fuertes proof, PMG UNC 62; 20 pesos fuertes proof, PMG Choice UNC 64; 10 pesos fuertes proof, PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ; 5 pesos fuertes proof, PMG Choice UNC 64; uniface 1 peso fuerte specimen, PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ; all finest known in PMG census. Pick-S1644s, S1642As, S1642s, S1641s, S1640s. This is an incredible set of beautiful Banco de Cuyo proofs and a specimen printed by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co. for this series which was never issued. The Standard Catalog, which has the series unpriced in any grade, notes the 5 pesos through the 100 pesos are proofs (in spite of the specimen ink stamp) while the 1 peso is a specimen with roulette punched SPECIMEN at center. These gorgeous notes all share the same vignette of a woman wearing a floral headdress paired with a different vignette; their reverses (besides the 1 peso which is uniface) are rendered in colorful shades. All are in essentially as-made condition with only a small tear noted in the lower margin on the 100 pesos.
