ARGENTINA (La Rioja), "imitation cob" 2 reales, 1822, very rare, NGC XF details / tooled. Janson-5.2; KM-1. 5.65 grams. Attractively toned and exceptionally complete example of this very rare type, boldly struck with denomination 2 above full RIOXA and date with A to right within pillars above waves, below which is a rarely seen rosette, with full castles and lions contained in a bold cross on reverse showing the letters S L R A at the cardinal points. Some traces of encrustation removal are present, along with fine scratches around the cross, a typical surface disturbance for imitation cobs. Contrary to other Argentine imitation issues of the period, these La Rioja pieces were struck in comparatively high fineness.

The A to the right of the date is attributed to Anguinán, in the Chilecito district of La Rioja, right next to the silver mines in the Famatina mountain. Following the Spanish recovery of Potosí in 1815, the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata suffered a severe shortage of coined money, increasing interest in the silver resources of Famatina. Under Nicolás Dávila, coin production in the region became more systematic between 1821 and 1823. According to Mariano Cohen’s study in the 2016 book Monedas Argentinas de Emergencia 1815–1823, by Fernando Chao (h), Mariano Cohen, Roberto E. Díaz, and Emilio Paoletti, the S A L R appearing on this coin stands for Sud América La Rioja.
