ARGENTINA, 1 peso "patacón," 1883, NGC MS 63, "top pop." Janson-14; KM-29. Very choice bold strike with full sunburst and sharp arms, radiant luster with light toning, really nearly prooflike, in any case tied with only one other for finest known in the NGC census. The “patacón” was Argentina’s crown-sized silver coin of the late 19th century, struck 1881–1883 at the Buenos Aires mint. The 1883 issue saw heavy circulation during a period of economic strain, leaving few survivors in high grade. Mint State examples are thus rare, and this piece—tied with just one other at the top of the NGC census—represents the highest quality available to collectors, a true condition rarity of Argentine numismatics.
