ANCIENT ROMAN, Roman Empire, AE antoninianus, Aurelian (270-275 AD), ex-Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle. RIC 61. From a collection of about 500 ancient coins owned by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle acquired by the New York numismatic firm MTB and offered for sale in 1968. The coin offered here has a lacquered appearance, VF with chocolate brown coloring, and shows a radiate cuirassed bust facing right / Sol standing left, holding globe and raising right arm, a captive seated at his feet on either side. Conan-Doyle's neatly handwritten notation of "L. Dom Aurelian 270.75" is on a separate paper disc. While the coin may be incidental, the rest is a fascinating bit of history. Attached to a paper certificate from Manfra Tordella & Brookes titled FROM THE COLLECTION OF Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle AUTHOR OF THE SHERLOCK HOLMES STORIES (1859-1930), with original tag hand-written by the author himself, also with a copy of a short Coin World article from August 21, 1968, about the sale.
