ANCIENT GREEK, Phoenicia, Tyre, AR shekel, 126/5 BC to ca. 65/6 AD, dated Civic Year 65 (62/1 BC), NGC Ch XF, strike 5/5, surface 4/5. DCA Tyre 217. 14.34 grams. Laureate bust of Melkart right, lion skin around neck / Eagle standing left on prow; palm frond behind; ΔΞ (date) above club upwards in left field, Z in right field, Phoenician alef between legs, ΤΥΡΟΥ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΑΣΥΛΟΥ. Nicely centered, exceptionally well struck (especially the reverse), with lots of rich toning, an iconic coin for its history, as Shekels of Tyre were accepted as payment for the temple tax at Jerusalem, and are generally thought to have made up the "thirty pieces of silver" that Judas received for betraying Jesus.
