ANCIENT GREEK, Ionia, Magnesia ad Maeandrum, AR tetradrachm, Euphemos, son of Pausanias, "magistrate," ca. mid-2nd century BC, stephanophoric type, NGC AU, strike 5/5, 4/5. BMC 36; SNG Berry 1068. 16.84 grams. Diademed and draped bust of Artemis, right / Apollo, nude, standing left, leaning on tripod, ΕYΦΗΜOΣ ΠAYΣANIOY left; laurel branches in right hand; all within laurel wreath. Struck on a large flan, slightly off center, crisp details and medallic alignment, Artemis in high relief. Stephanophoric refers to the wreath border on the reverse and this style became popular around the eastern Aegean soon after Athens introduced the type as the now-named "New Style" tetradrachms. The engraved dies created a somewhat convex obverse and concave reverse and the coins became especially popular in the city-states of Aeolis-Myrina, Aeolis-Kyme, and Magnesia ad Maeandrum. NGC #2150779-018. Reportedly pedigreed to the Geoffrey & Bequet auction of December 2007, lot 45.
