ACHAEMENID EMPIRE, Sardeis in Lydia (Persia), AV daric, type of Darius I (ca. 450 BC), NGC UNCIRCULATED (Money of the Bible). BMC Arabia pl. XXV, 12. Persian king or hero, wearing kidaris and kandys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling-running stance right, holding spear in right hand and bow in left / Incuse punch. Very early coinage with a modicum of design, well centered in oblong shape. The Achaemenid series began in the late sixth century BC and lasted until Alexander the Great conquered Persia in the 330s BC. The term "daric" was used by the Greeks as a term for Persian coinage, particularly gold, and its name derives from the Persian king Darius I, under whom the Persian coinage began. The daric was one of the earliest coins used by the Jewish people and appears in Bible references.
