1806 shipping insurance policy from the Washington Insurance Company (founded in 1800) in Providence, Rhode Island. 15" x 9-1/2". Half printed and half handwritten policy insuring Samuel H.P. Lee for $1,000 for goods on the ship Dauphin on a whaling voyage from New London, CT, to the coast of Brazil and elsewhere. Interestingly, the ship Dauphin rescued the survivors when the whaler Essex sank in 1820 after an attack by a sperm whale, inspiring Herman Melville's book Moby Dick. Nice condition, minor foxing and small tears in edge.
