Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, 1652E post-transitional (transitional Type VIII/B), 1-PH-6 at top, with unidentified countermark "8" on each side. S-P37a; KM-21; CT-434. 23.73 grams. This is a mysterious coin, as it was originally broader but rounded and countermarked long ago by some unknown authority, the countermarks bold but the host no better than Fine and with peripheral hole, with clear date below cross and bold full 1652 in legend, toned fields. Pedigreed to the Roberto Mastalir collection, #VIII.a-B.aa.x(ND)2 in his book (page 212), and pedigreed to the Cayon auction of June 2010 (lot #5196).
